Radnor House - Independent School Twickenham - Independent Secondary School - Independent Preparatory School

Admission to Radnor House

Parents and prospective students are invited to view Radnor House in operation during a normal working day and if you would like to undertake a tour of the school please email our Admissions Registrar, Sarah Harris on sharris@radnorhouse.org.

For entry in September 2012 and subsequent years, the following procedures will apply:

Years 3 & 4 (7/8 year old students)

Parents can apply for a place in Years 3 or 4 at any time throughout the academic year.  Students will be invited to attend one of our periodic assessment mornings in the order in which applications are received. There will be no tests during the assessment mornings for entry into Years 3 or 4. Instead, applicants will be observed undertaking a range of activities as part of a normal lesson. This will include some reading, writing and mathematics activities and emphasis will also be placed on interaction with other students and teachers. The applicants will be observed during outside play and each applicant will have the opportunity for an individual interview. The aim of the assessment mornings is to gain an understanding of the whole child. There are a total of 20 places available for girls and boys for entry to Year 3 each year with limited entry at Year 4.

Years 5 & 6 (9/10 year old students)

An offer of a place can occur at any stage of the academic year if there are still places available. Admission is by verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests held as part of the interview process. In addition to achieving a good standard in these formalised tests, successful performance in interview will be a key element of admission.

Year 7 (11 year old students)

Year 7 or 11+ is a key admission stage at Radnor House and in September 2012 and subsequent years there will be a total of 20 places available for girls and boys. An offer of one of these 20 places will be by successful performance in interview and achieving the required standard in our two formal assessments. These will comprise a one hour paper in Literacy (Comprehension and Creative Writing) and a one hour paper in Numeracy (this paper will be based on National Curriculum KS2/KS3 material). Students transferring from Year 6 in our Preparatory School have an automatic place in the Secondary school and do not need to follow the above admissions process.

Year 8 (12 year old students)

Occasional places may be available for entry into Year 8 in September 2012 or subsequent years. Students who wish to be considered for our waiting list for Year 8 can sit our standardised tests and attend an interview at any time during the year.

Year 9 (13 year old students)

Year 9 or 13+ is another key admission stage for Radnor House and in September 2013 and subsequent years there will be a total of 20 places available for boys and girls. Pupils will be required to sit a qualifying pre-test and interview in January, 18 months before the proposed date of entry. This will comprise a one hour paper in Literacy (Comprehension and Creative Writing) and a one hour paper in Numeracy (this paper will be based on National Curriculum KS3/KS4 material). The deadline for applications for 13+ entry in 2014 is the end of the Autumn term 2012 unless, in exceptional circumstances, a place becomes available.

Exceptionally, for 13+ entry in 2013, the qualifying pre-test and interview will be conducted at the start of the Autumn term 2012. This will comprise a one hour paper in Literacy (Comprehension and Creative Writing) and a one hour paper in Numeracy (this paper will be based on National Curriculum KS3/KS4 material). The deadline for applications for 13+ entry in 2013 is June 29th 2012 unless, in exceptional circumstances, a place becomes available.

Following the examination and interview, candidates will be offered a conditional place subject to the outcome of their Common Entrance performance (or equivalent) at the end of Year 8. Further information about the 13+ application process can be obtained from the School's Registrar, Sarah Harris (sharris@radnorhouse.org).

Year 10 (14 year old students)

Exceptionally, for 2012 there will be 20 places available for girls and boys. In subsequent years there will only be occasional places available. Interviews and examinations will be undertaken in strict order of Registration. Parents are asked to contact Radnor House as early as possible in order that their daughters and sons can be considered and assessed for the limited places available.

Students who are successful in securing a place in Year 10 for 2012 have a guaranteed place in our Sixth Form from September 2014.

Year 11 and Sixth Form (15/18 year old students)

We do not normally admit into Year 11. The next stage of admission to Radnor House will be into the Sixth Form that will commence in September 2014.

If you would like any further information please contact the Head Elect, David Paton, by clicking here.  With your permission, once testing has taken place and prior to the offer of a place, we will contact your child's current school and ask to be supplied with a confidential student reference. If parents prefer, a copy of the child's most recent report can be substituted for the school reference.

General Information

Radnor House is a selective school and admits students to the:

  • Preparatory School - Ages 7-11
  • Secondary School - Ages 11 – 16
  • Sixth Form - Ages 16 - 18

At Radnor House we are committed to supporting and encouraging all of our students. Once a girl or boy is admitted to any year in our Preparatory School, transfer to the Secondary School is automatic. In reality this means that once a student has gained entry to any year in either the Preparatory or Secondary school, continuity of education is guaranteed until the end of Sixth Form education.

Siblings

Radnor House, as a co-educational school with a family centred ethos, prioritises the admission of siblings who wish to be educated at the same school. To facilitate this, preference will be given to applications from girls and boys who have a sibling currently being educated at the school. However, the admission of a sibling to Radnor House is dependent on there being a place available in the relevant year group and on the sibling who is applying for entry, successfully completing the published assessment criteria for admission to Radnor House.

Special consideration and English as an additional language

Arrangements will be made for students who have recognised specific learning requirements to ensure they are supported in the entrance procedure. Support can be in the form of additional time, the use of a laptop computer or other agreed strategies.

Radnor House will make appropriate arrangements for any applicant for whom English is not their first language. However, the successful completion of the relevant assessment procedure and a successful interview are essential requirements if the offer of a place is to be made.
